In the recently ended WWDC keynote 2017, Apple made a slew of announcements for the Mac, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Watch, and of course, iOS 11.

Apple announced that it will give special attention to apps that will be ready for iOS 11 by launch day. When you update your app to the latest SDK or add features from iOS 11, your app will have a better chance of getting featured in the App Store.

If you're planning to build a new based on iOS 11 or add new features that can help your existing app, or you simply want to do an iOS 11 compatibility update for your existing app, here are the top 5 considerations for updating your app for iOS 11.

Enhanced Visual Design Language

Perhaps the least explicit of all the announcements made at WWDC 2017 is the iOS visual design language. It hints at what will come in future versions of iOS, especially iOS 11.

In the past, Apple had completely changed the interface of iOS 7 by adding rounded corners, a grid system, and thinner typefaces. In iOS 10, Apple had redesigned its Music app and also introduced a number of changes like larger fonts, thicker typefaces, and more contrast.

With iOS 11, Apple has introduced the all new App Store which appears similar to Apple Music's styles. Apple is also planning to release a redesigned podcast app in iOS 11 in the same styles. You should take note of these new design cues and ensure that your app stands out among in the crowded app market.

Redesigned Product Page in App Store

With iOS 11, Apple has introduced an all-new iOS 11 App Store and a completely redesigned app product page. The product page will now have new attributes like subtitle that Apple says can be tested. It's not clear at this point if we can test that with a tool that Apple would offer or it’s just a suggestion.

Earlier, Apple used to offer a single app preview which users can watch before downloading your app. In iOS 11, that will now increase to up to three previews. So, if you haven't had any app previews earlier, then you should definitely add them now.

Better Engage Users with New Business Chat Feature

With iOS 11, Apple has introduced a new "Business Chat" tool. It has to be seen whether this Business Chat can really compete with others in the market, since it integrates across platforms. One of the largest complaints with Apple's ecosystem is that businesses and developers get very little access to users. Business Chat will start to change this once and for all. You can make use of this feature to better engage with users.

Apple Pay

Apple Pay was one of the best new features introduced in iOS 11. It is similar to Samsung Pay and will let users transfer their money to friends. Users can open the Apple Pay through the Messages app and send money from debit or credit cards. Moreover, it also supports Siri voice commands to pay someone.

Drag and Drop, Browse Files

iOS 11 supports drag and drop within UIKit itself. Apple has also added view controllers for browsing files locally and remotely. It also supports third-party services such as Dropbox and Google Drive which you can make use of in your app.

Final Thoughts

Now that Apple has announced several new features in iOS 11, it's time to build apps that are compatible with iOS 11. With iOS 11, Apple has officially ended support for 32-bit apps. Furthermore, it has also started the transition process for killing 32-bit app support on macOS as well. So, make sure your app runs smoothly and does not have any compatibility issues with iOS 11.
